Establishment of Faridpur District :
According to Banglapedia, Faridpur district was established in 1815. The Faridpur Municipality, under the Dhaka Division, was founded in 1869. As per the gazette notification dated July 19, 1875, the Faridpur District Judiciary was granted a separate administrative existence for convenience.
Under British architectural supervision, the Faridpur Judge Court Building was constructed between 1885-86, and the Faridpur District Judge Court was formally established in 1889. Abul Fayez Mujibur Rahman (A.F. Mujibur Rahman) was the first Muslim jurist from the Indian Civil Service in Faridpur district. Available records indicate that in 1884, Sri B.C. Mitra Square joined as the first District Judge of Faridpur. Later, several British judges, including C.M. Mithar, J.F. Graham, G.B. Misford, and D.E. Leonard, served as District Judges in Faridpur.
Heritage of Faridpur Court Building:
The two-story main building of the Faridpur District Judge Court is a remarkable British-era architectural structure made of red bricks. The pillars on the roof feature exquisite sculptural designs. The second-floor balcony is enclosed by ornamental iron railings, reflecting the architectural style of that period.
The building has three iron staircases—one on the east, one on the west, and one in the middle—all adorned with decorative iron railings. One of the unique features of this building is that it has no windows. The courtrooms on the second floor have glass-walled chambers above them, allowing ample natural light and keeping the rooms relatively cool. The doors of the building are 9 feet high, with iron latches attached.
The record room of the Faridpur District Judge Court contains historical documents written in Persian, including court orders and case records. These documents undoubtedly reflect the heritage of the Faridpur District Judge Court. Additionally, the record room preserves British-era seals from 1863, along with sealed documents and official orders.
The unique design and architectural style of the Faridpur District Judge Court Building, which has stood for nearly 150 years, continue to uphold its historical and cultural significance.
